HOLY SPIRIT

 

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him 

must worship in spirit and truth."

John 4:24

 

The Holy Spirit of GOD, when connected with our spirit, brings us to worship GOD in spirit and truth. Begining with our spirit, we progress to worship GOD with our soul and body. The soul comprises of our intellect, emotion and will. Surrendering all of ourselves to GOD is true worship.

Now may the God of peace Himself 

sanctify you completely; 

and may your whole spirit, soul, and body 

be preserved blameless 

at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:23

Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, 

the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 

But we all, with unveiled face, 

beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, 

are being transformed into the same image 

from glory to glory, 

just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 3:16-18

 "If you love Me, keep My commandments. 

And I will pray the Father, 

and He will give you another Helper, 

that He may abide with you forever-- the Spirit of truth, 

whom the world cannot receive, 

because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; 

but you know Him, 

for He dwells with you and will be in you. 

I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

John 14:15-18

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of JESUS Who proceeds from GOD the Father and Who dwells in us. He is our Helper and He leads us into all truth.

"But when the Helper comes, 

whom I shall send to you from the Father, 

the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, 

He will testify of Me.

John 15:26

 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. 

It is to your advantage that I go away; 

for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; 

but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 

And when He has come, 

He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, 

and of judgment:

John 16:7-8

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, 

He will guide you into all truth; 

for He will not speak on His own authority, 

but whatever He hears He will speak; 

and He will tell you things to come. 

He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine 

and declare it to you. 

  All things that the Father has are Mine. 

Therefore I said that He will take of Mine 

and declare it to you.

John 16:13-15

The Holy Spirit continues the work what JESUS did on earth, in and through His people.

The Holy Spirit speaks through us to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. In every way, He will glorify JESUS and testify of Him through us.

The LORD took 'of the Spirit' that was upon Moses and placed the same upon the seventy elders, so that they could share in and continue the work of Moses. Similarly, JESUS has given us 'Of His Spirit' so that we may be like Him and continue His work on earth. 

 By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
1 John 4:13

The Holy Spirit also reveals GOD's heart to us and enables us to pray according to His will and to make inercession according to His heart.

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. 

For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us 

with groanings which cannot be uttered. 

 Now He who searches the hearts knows 

what the mind of the Spirit is, 

because He makes intercession for the saints 

according to the will of God.

Romans 8:26-27

because the love of God 

has been poured out in our hearts 

by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:5

 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; 

and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, 

for God is love.
1 John 4:7-8

GOD's love is manifested to us and through us by the Holy Spirit. 

 For this reason I bow my knees 

to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 

from whom the whole family 

in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, 

to be strengthened with might 

through His Spirit in the inner man, 

that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; 

that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 

may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height-

- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; 

that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 
Ephesians 3:14-19

He is also the Spirit of grace!

Anyone who has rejected Moses' law 

dies without mercy on the testimony 

of two or three witnesses. 

Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, 

will he be thought worthy 

who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, 

counted the blood of the covenant 

by which he was sanctified a common thing, 

and insulted the Spirit of grace?

Hebrews 10:28-29

 If you then, being evil, 

know how to give good gifts to your children, 

how much more will your heavenly Father 

give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

Luke 11:13

Receinving JESUS into our lives and receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit, has to be the desire and decision of each individual. GOD does not force Himself on anyone.

Even when the Holy Spirit is in us, He does not rule over us forcibly. We will always carry the responsibility to make the decision each day and each moment, to yield to His gentle promptings and walk in obedience to Him.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, 

by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 

  Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, 

and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 

  And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, 

forgiving one another, 

just as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:30-32

Do not quench the Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:19

When we let selfishness and sin rule in our lives, the power of the Holy Spirit is quenched and our life will be carnal and unprofitable for the Kingdom of GOD. 

We must allow the Holy Spirit to rule over our mind. Then we will be living victorious lives, led by the Spirit. If we live our lives led by our selfish and carnal ways, we will be progressing towards eternal death!

There is therefore now no condemnation 

to those who are in Christ Jesus, 

who do not walk according to the flesh, 

but according to the Spirit. 

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus 

has made me free from the law of sin and death. 

For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son 

in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: 

He condemned sin in the flesh, 

that the righteous requirement of the law 

might be fulfilled in us who do not walk 

according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 

For those who live according to the flesh 

set their minds on the things of the flesh, 

but those who live according to the Spirit, 

the things of the Spirit. 

For to be carnally minded is death, 

but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; 

for it is not subject to the law of God, 

nor indeed can be. So then, 

those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, 

if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. 

Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, 

he is not His. And if Christ is in you, 

the body is dead because of sin, 

but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead 

will also give life to your mortal bodies 

through His Spirit who dwells in you. 

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, 

to live according to the flesh. 

For if you live according to the flesh you will die; 

but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage 

again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption 

by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." 

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit 

that we are children of God,

Romans 8:1-16

The works of darkness, and the fruit of the Spirit are clearly distinguished in the lives of people.

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, 

and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 

  For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, 

and the Spirit against the flesh; 

and these are contrary to one another, 

so that you do not do the things that you wish. 

  But if you are led by the Spirit, 

you are not under the law. 

  Now the works of the flesh are evident, 

which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, 

murders, drunkenness, revelries, 

and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, 

just as I also told you in time past, 

that those who practice such things 

will not inherit the kingdom of God. 

  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. 

Against such there is no law. 

  And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh 

with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, 

let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Galatians 5:16-26

 When all the people were baptized, 

it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; 

and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 

  And the Holy Spirit descended 

in bodily form like a dove upon Him, 

and a voice came from heaven which said, 

"You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased."
Luke 3:21-22

The Holy Spirit came upon the LORD JESUS, when in obedience to the Father and in humility, while He got baptised by John, He prayed. Baptism signifies dying to self, being buried and being raised to live for GOD. 

JESUS lived out His baptism by following the leading of the Spirit and even giving up food for a period.

 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, 

returned from the Jordan 

and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 

being tempted for forty days by the devil. 

And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, 

when they had ended, He was hungry..

..Now when the devil had ended every temptation, 

he departed from Him until an opportune time. 

 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, 

and news of Him went out 

through all the surrounding region. 

  And He taught in their synagogues, 

being glorified by all.

Luke 4:1-2, 13-15

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good 

and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, 

for God was with Him.

Acts 10:38

The LORD JESUS was filled with the Holy Spirit, was led by the Spirit and lived in the power of the Spirit. Thus He exposed and destroyed the works of the devil. 

As His followers, we are also asked to die to self so that the Holy Spirit might come upon us and that we may be fiiled with the Holy Spirit, to live victoriously and to serve the LORD with supernatural power!

 

 So he answered and said to me: 

"This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 

'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' 

Says the Lord of hosts.
Zechariah 4:6

 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, 

these are sons of God.
Romans 8:14

 And when they had prayed, 

the place where they were assembled together 

was shaken; 

and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, 

and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Acts 4:31

Steven, being full of the Holy Spirit, was able to face his persecuters with Heavenly power. Like our LORD, he released forgiveness to them before entering the glorious presence of GOD! 

 When they heard these things 

they were cut to the heart, 

and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 

  But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, 

gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, 

and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 

  and said, "Look! I see the heavens opened 

and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" 

  Then they cried out with a loud voice, 

stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 

  and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. 

And the witnesses laid down their clothes 

at the feet of a young man named Saul. 

  And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God 

and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 

  Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, 

"Lord, do not charge them with this sin." 

And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Acts 7:54-60

Moses was anointed for the task of leading GOD's people in their journey out of Egypt to the promised land. Then the same Spirit was also placed on the 70 elders, to support him in that task.

 

So Moses went out and told the people 

the words of the Lord, 

and he gathered the seventy men 

of the elders of the people

 and placed them around the tabernacle. 

Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, 

and took of the Spirit that was upon him, 

and placed the same upon the seventy elders; 

and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, 

that they prophesied, although they never did so again. 

But two men had remained in the camp: 

the name of one was Eldad, 

and the name of the other Medad. 

And the Spirit rested upon them. 

Now they were among those listed, 

but who had not gone out to the tabernacle; 

yet they prophesied in the camp. 

And a young man ran and told Moses, 

and said, "Eldad and Medad 

are prophesying in the camp." 

So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, 

one of his choice men, 

answered and said, "Moses my lord, forbid them!" 

Then Moses said to him, "Are you zealous for my sake? 

Oh, that all the Lord's people were prophets 

and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!"

Numbers 11:24-29

The Holy Spirit rested not only on those who were gathered around the tabernacle, but also on the two who were in the camp. GOD sees the heart and knows who are chosen.

The sign that followed was, prophesying, which happened to the 70 elders and also to Saul only for that occasion. They did not carry the prophetic anointing like Moses and David did.

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples of the LORD JESUS and the sign that followed was, speaking in different tongues.

It is the Sovereign LORD Who chooses and anoints a person for a specific task. Anointing is symbolic of the Holy Spirit coming upon that person. Saul and then David were anointed for the task of ruling GOD's people. 

 The prophet Samuel said to young Saul:

".. Then you shall go on forward from there

 and come to the terebinth tree of Tabor. 

There three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you, 

one carrying three young goats, 

another carrying three loaves of bread, 

and another carrying a skin of wine. 

And they will greet you 

and give you two loaves of bread, 

which you shall receive from their hands. 

After that you shall come to the hill of God 

where the Philistine garrison is. 

And it will happen, 

when you have come there to the city, 

that you will meet a group of prophets 

coming down from the high place

 with a stringed instrument, a tambourine, 

a flute, and a harp before them; 

and they will be prophesying. 

Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, 

and you will prophesy with them 

and be turned into another man. 

And let it be, when these signs come to you, 

that you do as the occasion demands; 

for God is with you."

1 Samuel 10:3-7

 So he sent and brought him in. 

Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, 

and good-looking. And the Lord said, 

"Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!" 

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him

 in the midst of his brothers; 

and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David 

from that day forward.

 So Samuel arose and went to Ramah. 

But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, 

and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him..

..And so it was, 

whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, 

that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. 

Then Saul would become refreshed and well, 

and the distressing spirit would depart from him.

1 Samuel 16:12-14, 23

When David was anointed, The Holy Spirit came upon Him from that day forward. The Holy Spirit departed from Saul. Only one person at a time could carry the anointing of the king.

Because Saul disobeyed GOD, he lost the kingly anointing. He was also distressed by a spirit sent by GOD. That spirit was subdued, when David who was anointed, played music on his harp!

David, having observed the sad situation of Saul when the Holy Spirit was taken away from him, cried out the following prayer to the LORD when he himself fell into sin! 

 Do not cast me away from Your presence, 

And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Psalm 51:11

He is the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might and the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, 

And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 

  The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, 

The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, 

The Spirit of counsel and might, 

The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

Isaiah 11:1-2

 "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, 

Because the Lord has anointed Me 

To preach good tidings to the poor; 

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, 

To proclaim liberty to the captives, 

And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, 

And the day of vengeance of our God; 

To comfort all who mourn, 

To console those who mourn in Zion, 

To give them beauty for ashes, 

The oil of joy for mourning, 

The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; 

That they may be called trees of righteousness, 

The planting of the Lord, 

that He may be glorified."

Isaiah 61:1-3

The above prophecy was fulfilled in the Messiah, the LORD JESUS CHRIST. 

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. 

And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue 

on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 

And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. 

And when He had opened the book, 

He found the place where it was written: 

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, 

Because He has anointed Me 

To preach the gospel to the poor; 

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, 

To proclaim liberty to the captives 

And recovery of sight to the blind, 

To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 

  To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." 

  Then He closed the book, 

and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. 

And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue 

were fixed on Him. 

  And He began to say to them, 

"Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

Luke 4:16-21

As followers of the LORD JESUS, we carry the same anointing for the work of His Kingdom. As we receive His grace and anointing, we have the authority to release forgiveness and set people free from the bondage of sin through the blood of JESUS.

 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! 

As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 

And when He had said this, He breathed on them, 

and said to them, 

"Receive the Holy Spirit. 

If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; 

if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
John 20:21-23

 And John bore witness, saying, 

"I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, 

and He remained upon Him.
John 1:32

The LORD, Who was baptised with the Holy Spirit, is the One Who baptises us with the Holy Spirit.

John the Baptist said:

"   I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, 

but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, 

whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. 

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  "

Matthew 3:11

 JESUS said to His disciples, 

"  Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; 

but tarry in the city of Jerusalem 

until you are endued with power from on high."

Luke 24:49

And being assembled together with them, 

He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, 

but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," 

He said, "you have heard from Me; 

  for John truly baptized with water, 

but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit 

not many days from now." 

  Therefore, when they had come together, 

they asked Him, saying, 

"Lord, will You at this time 

restore the kingdom to Israel?" 

  And He said to them, 

"It is not for you to know times or seasons 

which the Father has put in His own authority. 

  But you shall receive power 

when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; 

and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, 

and in all Judea and Samaria, 

and to the end of the earth."

Acts 1:4-8

When we wait on the LORD in humility, obedience and unity as GOD's people, the Holy Spirit will come upon us and we will be baptised with Him. When that hahppens, we will be witnessed to JESUS.  

When the Holy Spirit is upon us, we are empowered and are able to boldly live out our lives for JESUS.

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, 

they were all with one accord in one place. 

  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, 

as of a rushing mighty wind, 

and it filled the whole house 

where they were sitting. 

Then there appeared to them divided tongues, 

as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 

  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit 

and began to speak with other tongues, 

as the Spirit gave them utterance. 

  And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, 

devout men, from every nation under heaven. 

  And when this sound occurred, 

the multitude came together, and were confused, 

because everyone heard them speak 

in his own language...

..Cretans and Arabs-

-we hear them speaking in our own tongues 

the wonderful works of God."

Acts 2:1-6, 11

And we are His witnesses to these things, 

and so also is the Holy Spirit 

whom God has given to those who obey Him."

Acts 5:32

While Peter was still speaking these words, 

the Holy Spirit fell upon all 

those who heard the word. 

And those of the circumcision 

who believed were astonished, 

as many as came with Peter, 

because the gift of the Holy Spirit 

had been poured out 

on the Gentiles also. 

For they heard them speak with tongues 

and magnify God. 

Then Peter answered, "Can anyone forbid water, 

that these should not be baptized 

who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" 

And he commanded them to be baptized 

in the name of the Lord. 

Then they asked him to stay a few days.

Acts 10:44-48

The Holy Spirit is available to all people, Jews and gentiles.

 "And it shall come to pass afterward 

That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; 

Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, 

Your old men shall dream dreams, 

Your young men shall see visions.

.Joel 2:28

 The prophecy in the Old Testament, is being fulfilled these last days.

An individual who is filled with the Holy Spirit, can lay hands on another, whose heart is right and open to receive the Holy Spirit. Then GOD pours out His Spirit on that person.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a gift from GOD and cannot be purchased with money or any other way.

Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem 

heard that Samaria had received the word of God, 

they sent Peter and John to them, 

  who, when they had come down, 

prayed for them 

that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 

For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. 

They had only been baptized 

in the name of the Lord Jesus. 

  Then they laid hands on them, 

and they received the Holy Spirit. 

And when Simon saw 

that through the laying on of the apostles' hands 

the Holy Spirit was given, 

he offered them money, saying, 

"Give me this power also, 

that anyone on whom I lay hands 

may receive the Holy Spirit." But Peter said to him, 

"Your money perish with you, 

because you thought that the gift of God 

could be purchased with money!

Acts 8:14-20

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, 

I do not want you to be ignorant: 

You know that you were Gentiles, 

carried away to these dumb idols, 

however you were led. 

Therefore I make known to you 

that no one speaking by the Spirit of God 

calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say 

that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 

There are differences of ministries, 

but the same Lord. 

And there are diversities of activities, 

but it is the same God who works all in all. 

But the manifestation of the Spirit 

is given to each one for the profit of all: 

for to one is given the word of wisdom 

through the Spirit, 

to another the word of knowledge 

through the same Spirit, 

to another faith by the same Spirit, 

to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 

to another the working of miracles, 

to another prophecy, 

to another discerning of spirits, 

to another different kinds of tongues, 

to another the interpretation of tongues.

But one and the same Spirit works all these things, 

distributing to each one individually as He wills.

1 Corinthians 12:1-11

The earth was without form, and void; 

and darkness was on the face of the deep. 

And the Spirit of God was hovering 

over the face of the waters. 

Then God said, "Let there be light"; 

and there was light.

Genesis 1:2-3

The Holy Spirit hovers over and implements what GOD speaks.

Even now, GOD speaks through His people. He speaks light, fullness and order into people and situations that are without form, without purpose in chaos, empty and void without GOD's love. GOD speaks into the darkness in the minds and hearts of people throug His word and through His people. The Holy Spirit implements GOD's words into lives and situations!

As people of GOD, let us live, led by the Holy Spirit and speak according to His promptings and see things happen, that are impossible with men!

 And I have put My words in your mouth; 

I have covered you with the shadow of My hand, 

That I may plant the heavens, 

Lay the foundations of the earth, 

And say to Zion, 'You are My people.' "
Isaiah 51:16
